The State University of Göttingen, Germany, one of the DRIVER partners, signed an 'Open Choice' deal with the scientific publisher Springer on Sept 28, 2007. Through Open Choice, all articles published by authors of the University of Göttingen in Springer journals, can be self-archived in the institutional repository. In order to get the rights to do this, the university pays the publisher, but archives the article herself, hence it is not 'Gold' OA publishing. Supporters call this a step forward through hybrid models, others point out that, since this is not gold OA publishing, it is only an extra cost for a right authors already had (self-archiving). More OA to content, yes, but for which price?
